Ndiara is named after the factory in northern Muranga’a county, in the Mathioya division where this coffee was processed. Ndiara factory is operated by 400 active members of Kiru Farmers Cooperative Society. It is a relatively small society. However, it gives them the agility to make changes and improvements quickly.
The farmers realise that improving the infrastructures of the factory yield higher quality coffees. Thus, they invested in grading tables, better drying beds and advanced depulping equipment. Further, they built a water-soaking pit to purify the water used during coffee processing to avoid contamination with fresh water. The result is incredible.
Coffee in Kenya is typically traceable to the factory or mill where they are processed. Most coffee farmers in Kenya own small land to grow their crops, including coffee. Thus, they rely on the central processing unit for the sale and processing of their coffees.
